CBD, in full cannabidiol, like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), is a very important compound found in fiber hemp and cannabis. This cannabinoid possesses a wide variety of medical properties but does not allow the user to experience a stoned or high feeling. Among other things, the cannabinoid THC is responsible for this. However, CBD is able to reduce the effects of THC.
Endo- and phytocannabinoids
CBD is one of at least 113 active cannabinoids, officially called phytocannabinoids, found in hemp and cannabis plants. Phytocannabinoids possess the same properties as substances found naturally in our bodies. These substances are called endocannabinoids, and components such as THC and CBD mimic these bodily substances.
Because they are copies of our body’s own substances, they fit like keys to specific receptors (receptors on cells) in our body and can affect certain functions, such as relieving pain or inhibiting inflammation.
Thus, our body does not view these phytocannabinoids as unknown invaders, so-called antigens, and makes no attempt to engage a defense mechanism. This has the advantage that the effect takes effect at lightning speed and unpleasant side effects are excluded. Since these facts of the so-called endocannabinoid system have been discovered, scientists have also increasingly focused on cannabidiol.
How does CBD work in our bodies?
Our body is an intricate biological machine in which all kinds of chemical processes are constantly taking place. To understand how the phytocannabinoid CBD works in our bodies, please refer to the information page: What is the difference between CBD and THC?
Medicinal properties of CBD
It has been shown that CBD can be very valuable in the treatment of epilepsy and central nervous system disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS), for example. Its lack of psychoactivity (in the sense that there is no euphoric or mind-altering effect) makes it ideal for treating animals, children, the elderly and patients who prefer to stay well-focused.
CBD has been shown to be as effective in treating pain and tumors as THC in some situations. Also, it lowers blood sugar levels and can therefore be used effectively in the treatment of diabetes. CBD has a calming effect and may therefore be useful in treating stress-related disorders.
